A Walk on the Dry Side:
Drought-Friendly Tree Tour

Worried about the drought? Cloudless skies got you down? Cheer up, because the trees and shrubs on Our City Forest’s new tour are doing just fine!

Join us on August 9 at 9 AM for an educational Tree Mobile bus tour of drought-friendly trees and gardens of San Jose. You’ll get to meet the experts: residents who made the plunge from thirsty turf to gorgeous, water-wise landscaping. Plus, get tips on water conservation, learn the dos and don’ts of tree care during the drought, and learn why trees are a city’s best friend in these hot, dry times.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Question:

Do I need to RSVP for the tree tour?

Answer:
We request RSVPs for all walking tree tours so we can come prepared with enough materials for everyone, but we won't turn anybody away. We do require RSVPs for tours that use the Tree Mobile, however, as it has limited seating.

Question:
What is the price of admission?

Answer:
Tree tours are FREE. We will gratefully accept donations at the end of the tour, if you wish to make one.

Question:
When and where is the tree tour?

Answer:
We conduct tree tours all around San Jose, usually--but not always--on Saturday afternoons. Check the specific tour's description or contact the Tree Tour Coordinator for details on the meeting time and place.

Question:
What should I bring/wear?

Answer:
Wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather; tree tours are rain or shine! We recommend bringing your own reusable water bottle, as well as a sunhat, sunscreen, sunglasses, jacket, or umbrella, as appropriate.

Question:
Is the tour appropriate for kids?

Answer:
Our general-audience tours are enjoyed by well-behaved folks of all ages, but the content is especially appropriate for treehuggers, botanists, and nature-lovers in middle school and beyond. We also offer tours whose content and delivery are specially designed for younger people; check the Current & Upcoming Tree Tours tab or contact the Tree Tour Coordinator for more information.

Question:
Is the tour ADA-accessible?

Answer:
The locations where we conduct tree tours are often wheelchair-friendly. Contact the Tree Tour Coordinator for more details about the specific tour you'd like to attend.

Question:
How is the Tree Tour Program funded?

Answer:
Our City Forest's Tree Tour Program is funded by a grant from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire). The grant is effective until 2015.

Question:
Can I arrange a custom or private tree tour for my club/family/students/etc.?

Answer:
Yes, if your group has at least 10 members. If you wish to arrange a private session of an existing tour, please contact the Tree Tour Coordinator at least 1 week ahead of time to schedule. If you would like Our City Forest to design a customized tour for your group, for example a tour of your neighborhood's trees or a tour with a special theme, please give us at least 2-3 weeks to develop your requested content.
